The National Lottery has funded an international programme since 1997 and the Big Lottery Fund has maintained a steady level of funding to international initiatives, which represent 2-3 percent of the value of total awards we distribute.
Big Lottery Fund’s international funding so far
Between 2009 and March 2015, a programme called International Communities was our main source of funding for projects overseas, with a budget of £80 million.
The programme focused on the causes of poverty and deprivation and bringing about a long-term difference to the lives of some of the most disadvantaged people in the world. The programme outcomes were closely aligned to the Millennium Development Goals, and focussed on primary education, health, access to natural resources, human rights and sustainable livelihoods.
Next steps for international funding
We are currently in the process of developing a new international funding offer that will compliment the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals as well as the Fund’s new Strategic Framework.
